Magnetic VESTAMID®

  • Polyamide 12 as carrier for magnetic materials
  • Manufacture of polarized magnets

Marl—Highly complex stators and rotors for electromotors and sensors are manufactured by injection molding from highly filled VESTAMID® polyamide 12 molding compounds of the High Performance Polymers Business Unit of Essen, Germany-based Evonik Industries.

Thermoplast-bonded magnets with highly complex shapes
Magnets are conventionally manufactured by pressure sintering, which does not allow complex geometries. By contrast, magnets with a thermoplastic carrier material can be injection molded into virtually any shape. VESTAMID® polyamide 12 from Evonik is a particularly suitable carrier because of its high break elongation and impact resistance, and good resistance to hydrolysis and chemicals. Water uptake is very low compared with, for example, polyamide 6.

For the fabrication of magnets, VESTAMID® is filled with high proportions of ferrites or neodymium magnetic materials. If external magnetic fields are applied during processing, polarized magnets, known as multipoles, are formed. Simple processing by injection molding allows highly complex stators and rotors to be manufactured with the best price-performance ratio.
